I'm not a big AI/ML guy, but I do enjoy math, and I would say I sort of have been learning math aimlessly, just following where my interest goes. I got a client a month ago, who I started tutoring math, and I almost surprised myself how much math I know, how well I explain things and how much connections I can make. This sounds like bragging now but my point is despite over the years, I virtually talked to no one about me learning math, I still derived great pleasure from it, and I guess the same could be said about Bach's music, I play Bach exclusively and most pieces I enjoy I just play for myself.

But I guess everyone has a different definition about "learning for learning's sake". Maybe, like what the almost-classic Myth of the Objective said, the path to the ultimate goal isn't always clear.

Yup, I often think about the contradiction between being a proponent of the myth of the objective view and deciding to cut down free learning time in favour of more short-term goals.

I think I often allow myself to get influenced by 1) social pressure to feel like I am working on something concrete as opposed to just aimlessly exploring and 2) pressure from AI advancements, feeling like I have to rush to keep up, worrying about job prospects and financial consequences.

Putting yourself under that stress is definitely a bad way to do anything creative... I think I need to start chatting with the Buminati gang again :)

By the way, I also helped a bit with the translation of Math Academy, together with Jarrett and others. I think it's great for the general public, and if I want quick and stable result I would try that too. I guess I should say I don't need that much math in my life/work so I have the luxery to take my time and go really slow:) and maybe learn French, German, etc on the way:)
